Round Rock High School Film Club Wins Austin-Area Contest

A group of seven Round Rock High School film club members took the top prize at the Austin Channel filmmaking boot-camp with their five-minute short film, “Broken Together.”
The week-long boot-camp was part of Austin Channel’s youth film festival, iYoung Fusion Fest, which takes place during the first week of summer break. The Round Rock film club group competed under the name, Slate Society.

“After being in film club and talking about film so much, it was nice to stop talking about it and start making something,” said Riley Cusiak, a RRHS student who acted in the short film. “It was a big step for us.”
During the boot-camp, the student group was tasked with producing a short film in one week that would eventually be screened on live television and scored against five other high school team. The team won a $1,000 grand prize, which ended up being $142 for each team member of Slate Society.
“We had some experience working with each other, but as far as professional-grade filming equipment, we wanted to get a better idea of how it’s utilized and what it’s like to work under those kind of time constraints,” said Shay Cohen, the film’s director. “We figured it would be fun to do something we enjoy, which is filmmaking with a bunch of friends.”
The Round Rock High School film club is in its second year as an official club and has hopes of competing in UIL events in the future. Winning an independent contest is a positive step in the right direction, Joanne Trcka, film club sponsor, said.
“The experience itself, the hands-on experience, you can’t replace that,” Trcka said. “It was just nice to see them from start to finish. I’m very proud of what they did because if you view the other stuff the groups did, their stuff it so mature.”
